The HMI goals and vision

Graduate School of Human-Machine Interaction (HMI)

(Excerpt from the programme plan submitted to SSF in June, 1997)

Goals

The Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research (Stiftelsen för Strategisk Forskning, SSF) has established the Graduate School for Human-Machine Interaction (HMI) with two nodes: in Linköping and Stockholm. There are three major goals:

  1. To improve the Swedish competence in human-machine interaction by educating specialists in HMI.

  2. To make these HMI specialists useful to Swedish industry for the purpose of improving productivity and safety in systems design.

  3. To bring the quality of Swedish HMI research and academic standards to the highest international level.

Visions

The vision of the HMI graduate school is to develop knowledge in people to serve as:

  • HMI experts who understand that usability is a moving target

  • HMI experts who can communicate with users as well as with designers

  • HMI experts who considers the system characteristics of the human and machine system rather than either of them in isolation

  • HMI experts who can teach HMI at various levels

  • HMI experts who can form a bridge between industry and academia
